No compromise on missiles: Clear message from Iranian President Pejeshkian, blunt reply to America too
Islamabad. Iran’s President Mahsud Pezeshkian has given a big and clear statement regarding the country’s missile program. He said that there is no mention of Iran’s missile capability in the 14-point agreement with the United States and in future also Tehran will not make its defense program a part of any agreement. This statement of the President has come at a time when diplomatic efforts are going on to reduce tension between America and Iran.
While talking to the media in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, Pejeshkian said that Iran’s missile program is completely a matter related to national security. He claimed that the country’s defense capability has kept Iran safe in the face of external threats.
The President said that if Iran did not have a strong missile system, its adversaries, especially Israel and the United States, could have caused serious harm to it. He stressed that there is no connection between the missile program and the recent diplomatic agreement.
Pezeshkian is currently on a visit to Pakistan, where he is discussing issues like bilateral relations, regional security and economic cooperation with the Pakistani leadership. His statement came after the technical talks held in Switzerland, where many sensitive topics were discussed between America and Iran.
The purpose of the 14-point agreement recently made public by America is said to be to reduce regional tensions and to advance the process of dialogue between the two countries. The agreement covers several key points, including normalizing maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, providing relief from some economic sanctions on Iran, and creating a framework for further technical-level talks on its nuclear programme.
However, Pezeshkian’s statement clearly indicates that Iran is not in favor of showing any leniency regarding its defense policy and missile capability. Analysts believe that talks on the nuclear program can move forward, but the missile program may remain a sensitive and disputed issue between Tehran and Washington in the future.
This stance of the Iranian President has come at a time when the security situation in West Asia is constantly changing and many countries are keeping their eyes on US-Iran relations regarding the regional balance of power.
