No-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla rejected by voice vote in Lok Sabha…proceedings adjourned till tomorrow
New Delhi:There was a huge commotion in the Indian Parliament on Tuesday when the no-confidence motion moved by the opposition against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was defeated after voting. There was a heated debate between the ruling party and the opposition during the proceedings of the House. Which ultimately ended in the rejection of the proposal. Home Minister Amit Shah called this entire incident regrettable for the democratic structure. He took a tough stand, accusing the opposition of playing with the dignity of constitutional posts.
Such an unfortunate proposal after four decades
Let us tell you that while replying to the discussion on the motion, Amit Shah explained in detail that such a no-confidence motion has been brought against a speaker after a long gap of about 40 years. He termed it a very ‘unfortunate’ day in the glorious history of Indian democracy. Shah believed that the opposition was targeting those top positions to vent their political frustration. Which is a symbol of fairness and justice. He called this step not only unnecessary but also harmful for long-standing parliamentary traditions.
Taunt on Rahul Gandhi’s foreign tours
The Home Minister took a sharp dig at the repeated absence of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the House. He said that whenever it comes to debate in Parliament on any very serious and important national issue. Rahul Gandhi often goes on foreign trips. Shah quipped that perhaps he enjoyed speaking abroad more than discussing India’s democracy with dignity. He advised the Congress leadership to consider the seriousness of their leader and parliamentary etiquette.
Rahul’s presence in 17th Lok Sabha is only 51 percent
Continuing his attack on Rahul Gandhi, Shah presented the figures of his attendance in the House. He told that Rahul’s attendance in the 17th Lok Sabha was only 51 percent. Whereas the average was 66 percent. Similarly, in the 16th Lok Sabha, he was present in the House only 52 percent of the time and in the 15th, he was present in the House only 43 percent of the time. These figures are much lower than the national average. Which shows how indifferent Rahul Gandhi has been towards parliamentary responsibilities. This is worrying for democratic values.
Speaker’s responsibility to maintain discipline
Amit Shah gave a blunt reply to the complaints of microphone being switched off in the House. He clarified that it is the responsibility of the Speaker to run the proceedings of the Parliament smoothly and maintain discipline. Those members who will not follow the rules or will disrupt the House by disregarding discipline. His microphone will definitely be turned off. Shah said that Parliament is not a joke and to maintain its dignity it is mandatory to strictly follow the rules. So that smooth discussion can take place.
Proposal rejected after 10 hours of debate
Voting on the no-confidence motion took place in the House after a long marathon and heated discussion that lasted for about 10 hours. In which the opposition suffered a crushing defeat and the proposal failed completely. The clear results of the voting proved that the House has full faith in the capable leadership of Om Birla. Amit Shah finally said that the opposition should now focus on the real problems of the people. Important constitutional institutions and their heads should be attacked not just for the sake of political protest.
