“No need for any official announcements right now”: Glenn Maxwell aims to keep playing T20Is for Australia

Glenn Maxwell has shut down retirement rumors, aiming to represent Australia in more T20Is and eyeing 2028 T20 World Cup and LA Olympics.

Maxwell’s recent performances in the T20 World Cup were below his usual high standards, with scores of 9, 31, and 22, and a strike rate of just 110.71. His slowest 30-plus innings of his career came during the tournament, prompting Ricky Ponting to suggest that Maxwell may not feature in Australia‘s 2028 T20 World Cup squad after their early exit in 2026.

In a media interaction, Maxwell stated that he wasn’t planning to make any immediate decisions about his future.

“I think the reason I haven’t made a decision about my future is mainly because of what’s ahead in the next 12 months. There isn’t much T20 cricket scheduled, so there’s really no need for any official announcements right now. I’ll just monitor how my body feels, see how I’m progressing, and if opportunities come up in the future, I hope to be fit and ready to go,” Maxwell told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday.

When questioned about the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Olympics, Maxwell expressed hope of playing in both events, even though he would be 40 years old.

“Fit and firing? Hopefully. But I’m not putting any specific dates on it. I got better with each game during the World Cup. I tend to judge it more by how I’m moving on the field and how I’m feeling, rather than focusing on stats like wickets and runs. I felt like I could get through matches easily,” he added.

Maxwell’s retirement from ODIs means he’ll play just eight T20Is for Australia until August 2027. The team’s June tour of Bangladesh will focus mainly on the ODIs.

Maxwell is also preparing for his debut in the Pakistan Super League, where he will play for the Hyderabad Kingsmen.
