Bengaluru: The statement of senior MP Shashi Tharoor has come to light amidst the political turmoil within the Congress regarding the demolition campaign run by the Karnataka government in Bengaluru. Tharoor defended this action and said that the entire process was done within the ambit of law and assurance of alternative arrangements has also been given to the affected people.
This demolition campaign that took place in South Bengaluru at the end of last month had created uneasiness within the Congress. However, Shashi Tharoor says that when the solution is in front, it is not appropriate to give unnecessary political color to this issue or create a situation of provocation.
‘The land belonged to the government, it was illegally occupied’
According to media reports, Shashi Tharoor said on Friday that the land on which the houses were built was government property and people were living there illegally. He said, "First of all, this land belonged to the government and people were living there illegally. Secondly, it was a garbage dump and the water was contaminated with toxic waste, so it was not a suitable place for people to live."
Information was given before demolition
Tharoor also clarified that the residents were informed before the demolition. According to him, it is not fair to make the entire issue a political issue just because the affected people are poor.
He said, "The government has decided to provide temporary accommodation and has promised to provide permanent accommodation within five to six months." Tharoor added that when the path to solution has been found, there is no need to raise the issue unnecessarily.
‘There may be flaws, but solutions are necessary’
Shashi Tharoor admitted that there may be some shortcomings in the transfer process and differences are also possible over the way it is implemented. He said, "There may be flaws in the transfer process and differences of opinion on how to do it. But a promise has been made to find a solution."
He stressed that every action should be taken only according to the legal process.
Action taken under court instructions
According to Tharoor, the Karnataka government took this step following the instructions of the court. He said, "The Karnataka government has done this following the instructions of the court. Notices were issued, and in some cases notices were issued multiple times before the demolition."
However, he also added that he himself has not visited Karnataka, hence is not in a position to give any final opinion on this matter.
