Why is engine oil so important?

Engine oil is considered the lifeblood of any vehicle. It helps vehicle parts work properly, balances engine temperature, traps dust and metal particles, and makes gear shifting smoother. In a country like India, where traffic jams, heat and dust are high, engine oil is subjected to additional stress. Not changing the oil on time can increase engine noise, reduce mileage and reduce overall performance.

Many people change their engine oil very infrequently. Many riders do not change the engine oil at the right time to save money as the mechanic charges more for changing the bike engine oil. However, you can also change the engine oil yourself. Let’s find out about it.

What preparation should be done while changing the engine oil?

First of all get the right grade of engine oil for your bike. If the bike has an oil filter, also keep a new filter ready. Also keep a new crush washer close by for the drain pan, spanner, funnel, gloves and drain bolt.

Oil change procedure

Start the engine for 5 to 10 minutes and warm it up a bit, so that the old oil comes out easily. Stand the bike upright on the center stand. As soon as the upper filler cap and lower drain bolt are opened, the old oil will start to flow out. Wait until all the oil is gone.

After that change the oil filter. Apply a little fresh oil to the rubber gasket of the new filter before installing it, so that a proper seal is formed and there are no leaks.

New oil filling and final inspection

Fill in the prescribed amount with new oil through the funnel. Turn the engine off for one minute and check the oil level through the dipstick or sight glass. Store the old oil in a safe container and deposit it at the nearest service center or recycling point. This small task not only saves costs, but also increases the habit of taking care of your bike and helps keep the engine in good condition for a long time.
