Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has termed the abolition of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) as a disaster for crores of people in rural India. He said that the scheme was a realization of Gandhiji’s dream of Sarvodaya and was inspired by Article 41 of the Constitution, which gives the right to work. Now it has been bulldozed and destroyed, which is a failure of all of us. In her editorial “The Bulldozed Demolition of MGNREGA” in “The Hindu” newspaper, Sonia Gandhi wrote, “The death of MGNREGA is our collective failure.” She appealed to all to unite and protect the rights that protect all.

MGNREGA was being suppressed for a decade
Sonia said that the Modi government is claiming that employment has been increased from 100 to 125 days, but this is a deception. In the last decade, attempts were made to bring the scheme to its knees. The Prime Minister ridiculed the scheme in Parliament, kept the budget stagnant, excluded people from technology and delayed payments to workers. This is not just MGNREGA, but an attack on the Constitution. Right to vote, right to information, right to education, forest rights, right to compensation in land acquisition, all are being weakened. An attempt was made to snatch the right to MSP through three agricultural laws. The National Food Security Act could be the next target.
Conspiracy to suppress the voice of rural India?
MGNREGA had helped in dealing with the rural distress. Now by ending this the voice of the poor is being suppressed. Sonia Gandhi appealed. Now more than ever, it is important that we come together to defend the rights that save us. This news is based on Sonia Gandhi’s editorial in “The Hindu”, where she described MGNREGA as “bulldozed and demolished”. This debate can arise on the issue of rural development and employment, which raises questions on the policies of the Modi government.
