‘No-Shows’: Nearly 20,000 Indian students landed in Canada but never joined colleges
New Delhi: Amid an ongoing diplomatic spat between India and Canada, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) report shares shocking data about almost 20,000 Indian students reported as ‘no-shows’ at Canadian colleges and universities. Nearly 50,000 international students were reported as ‘no-shows’ in March and April 2024. Of these, almost 20,000 were Indian students, accounting for 5.4 per cent of the total tracked by the agency.
A total of 6.9 per cent of non-compliant international students reported considering all types of study permits. The data was collected under the International Student Compliance Regime, which requires Canadian universities and colleges to report on enrollment twice a rolling year to ensure compliance with study permits.
Looking at India’s figures alone, the report also highlighted that a total of 3,27,646 Indian students were compliant and 19,852 were non-compliant. The report also highlighted that a total of 12,553 Indian students were not reported by institutions. The compliance and non-compliance rates were 91.1 per cent and 5.4 per cent, respectively.
The IRCC report tracked international students from a total of 144 countries, and indicated that rates of non-compliance varied widely.
Non-compliant international students
- India: 19,582 students
- China: 4,279 students
- Nigeria: 3,902 students
- Ghana: 2,712 students

A total of 23,514 students (3.3 per cent of the total) did not report their status, according to the IRCC report, based on data submitted by Canadian institutions in March and April 2024. The International Student Compliance regime was introduced in 2014, requiring universities or institutions to report twice a year on whether international students are actively enrolled and attending classes.
