‘No trust on Safdarjung Hospital’, Sonam Wangchuk’s wife reached High Court, raised demand to shift to private hospital

New Delhi: After climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, the matter has now reached Delhi High Court. His wife Geetanjali Angmo has filed a petition in the court demanding that Wangchuk be immediately transferred from the government hospital to a private hospital. He says that he no longer has confidence in the medical system of Safdarjung Hospital and Wangchuk should be allowed to get treatment in the hospital of his choice. This entire incident has taken a new legal and political turn after his hospitalization.

Geetanjali Angmo has appealed for early hearing of her petition. The petition states that Sonam Wangchuk was on a peaceful hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for the last 21 days, but in the name of providing medical aid, she was forcibly removed from there and admitted to the hospital. It has been alleged in the petition that he is being kept in the hospital against his will. Also, the court has been requested to declare his presence in the hospital as illegal and unconstitutional. It has also been said in the petition that this is a violation of the fundamental rights granted under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution.

Demand for release and shift to private hospital

In the petition, the court has also been requested that Sonam Wangchuk should be immediately released from the hospital or she should be allowed to be admitted to any private hospital of her choice. The family alleges that since being admitted to the hospital, Wangchuk was not allowed to meet his lawyer and the doctors who were monitoring his health for a long time. They say that this has affected both their medical care and legal rights.

Questions raised regarding potassium level

Gitanjali Angmo also raised questions on the functioning of the hospital on social media platform X. He claimed that the hospital had told the family that the potassium level in Sonam Wangchuk’s body had fallen to 2.9, which is considered a critical condition. However, they allege that the public health bulletin issued by the hospital only mentioned low potassium levels, but the actual data was not shared. This created doubt in the minds of the family.

Separate claim in independent investigation

According to Angmo, after hours of repeated requests, the family received permission late at night to give Wangchuk’s blood sample for independent testing. He claims that the private laboratory report revealed potassium level of 3.5, which was said to be within normal limits. On this basis, he has raised questions on the hospital report and treatment process. He says that if there is a difference between the two reports then there should be an impartial investigation.

Allegation of not getting permission to leave the hospital

Geetanjali Angmo also alleged that despite several requests from the family, the hospital administration did not allow Wangchuk to be discharged or transferred to a private hospital. He claimed that a large number of policemen are deployed in the hospital premises, due to which there is difficulty in movement and meetings of family members. According to him, this situation does not resemble normal medical care but rather a restrictive environment.

"This is not treatment, this is illegal detention"

In his social media post, Angmo said that if Wangchuk’s health worsens further, the responsibility will be on the concerned officials and administration. He took this whole situation "illegal detention" While giving the agreement, immediate intervention of the court has been demanded. They say Wangchuk should be transferred as soon as possible to a hospital where the family can have confidence in the treatment process and independent medical care.

What did the hospital say first?

Earlier, in the health update issued by Safdarjung Hospital, it was told that Sonam Wangchuk has become weak due to prolonged hunger strike and lack of water in the body. However, the hospital had declared his condition stable and said that he needs constant medical monitoring and necessary treatment. Now everyone’s eyes are on the court’s stand in this matter. If the High Court hears the petition, it will be decided whether Wangchuk’s treatment will continue in the government hospital or he will be allowed to be transferred to a private hospital.
