His supporters said the move threatened to deepen tensions between Tehran and the West at a sensitive political moment.

Mohammadi, 53, had been on medical leave since the end of 2024 and was not expected to be sent back to prison, where he has spent years on charges that are widely condemned as political.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has expressed “deep concern” over Mohammadi’s arrest and called on Iranian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release him.

According to the report, Mashhad Governor Hassan Husseini confirmed the detention of the participants and described it as a “preventive” measure, but did not comment on the claims of violence or identify those arrested.
