North Korea conducts second cruise missile test in a week

Desk: Amid the Iran war, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watched the test of strategic cruise missiles from the country’s new 5,000-ton warship. This test was conducted on Tuesday off the west coast of North Korea. According to state media, this is the second such missile test in the past week. Kim watched the entire test via video link from a secret location. During this, his younger daughter Kim Ju Ae was also seen sitting with him. Kim Ju Ae is 13 years old. Earlier, in January 2025, she was also seen with Kim during a missile test.

North Korea’s state news agency, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), reported on Wednesday that Kim Jong Un monitored the missile test remotely. The test was intended to test its command and control system in a war-like situation. According to KCNA, North Korea also sought to demonstrate its seriousness about its nuclear capabilities.

This test comes at a time of heightened global concern about nuclear weapons. The US and Israel recently launched attacks on Iran to prevent it from acquiring the capability to develop nuclear weapons. According to reports, several cruise missiles were fired in quick succession from the newly commissioned destroyer No. 51 Choe Hyon off the coast of Nampho.

The missiles flew for about three hours over the South Korean Sea and then struck targets on islands. State TV video showed six missiles being fired in rapid succession westward from the ship’s stern vertical launch system (VLS). A previous test on March 4th involved the same ship firing five missiles.

According to KCNA, Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction with the test’s success. He said the test proved the reliability of the country’s strategic weapons command system and the ship’s combat capability. Kim also said North Korea’s nuclear weapons have now reached a new stage of multi-use capabilities and its war-deterrence capabilities are rapidly strengthening.
