Holi 2026: Everyone eagerly waits for Holi, the festival of colours, joy and happiness. Every year the festival of Holi is celebrated on the full moon date of Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month. This year this festival will be celebrated on 4 March 2026. Holi festival is celebrated with different traditions in many cities of India, which is famous all over the world. People come from far and wide to participate in it. You also know about those places in India from North to South where Holi is very famous.

Famous places to play Holi in India

  • Mathura-Vrindavan, UP: Holi of flowers is played in Mathura-Vrindavan, which is famous all over the world.
  • Barsana, UP: Lathmar Holi is played in Barsana. Here women beat men coming from Nandgaon with sticks. Holi here is famous because of this tradition. Holi festival is celebrated in Barsana for about a week.
  • Jaipur and Udaipur, Rajasthan: Holi celebrated in Jaipur and Udaipur cities of Rajasthan is also very famous. There is a special celebration here on the occasion of Holi, in which the royal family also participates.
  • Shantiniketan, West Bengal- Here the festival of Holi is celebrated as spring festival. Youth wear traditional clothes and participate in cultural programs and then play Holi.
  • Bihar- Kurtafaad Holi is played in Bihar, which is very famous. Here people tear men’s shirts or clothes while playing Holi. Not only this, in some places in rural areas, Holi is also played with mud and cow dung. Especially in Bihar, Holi is called Fagua.
  • Punjab: Holi is celebrated as ‘Hola Mohalla’ in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. Holi is organized here with martial arts, horse riding and langar.
  • Hampi, Karnataka: The festival of Holi is celebrated in a unique style in Hampi, Karnataka, the southern state of India. Here the festival of Holi is celebrated for two days. People gather in the street. After this, a procession is taken out to the beat of drums and colors are played.

‘Ger’ of Indore

In Indore city of Madhya Pradesh, Ger is celebrated on the occasion of Rang Panchami, 5 days after Holi, which is very famous. On this day the entire city becomes drenched in colours. Ger is about 300 years old tradition. Here in Rajwada area, lakhs of people gather, sing songs of Phag and play Holi with tankers of colors and water.
