Not KL Rahul or Faf du Plessis: Dinesh Karthik reveals the name of Delhi Capitals’ new captain

India’s wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik believes that the upcoming T20I series against England presents an excellent opportunity for Axar Patel to showcase his leadership skills. Karthik praised Axar for being appointed as the vice-captain to Suryakumar Yadav, highlighting that it is a significant role for the all-rounder. In a surprise revelation, Karthik also disclosed that Axar will lead the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2025 season, though the official announcement is yet to be made.

Axar has been with the Delhi Capitals for the past six seasons, and his retention for a hefty Rs 18 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction reflects his importance to the franchise. Karthik showed his confidence in Axar’s abilities, stating,

“Wishing Axar Patel all the best for the India vice-captaincy role. A good opportunity for him. He is also set to captain the Delhi Capitals. So here is a good opportunity for him to lead and show the way. He has also been leading for Gujarat in the past”.

Axar’s appointment as Delhi Capitals’ captain will see KL Rahul take on the role of a specialist batter, marking a shift for the seasoned IPL captain. Rahul, who was signed by Delhi for Rs 14 crore, brings a wealth of experience, having captained both Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants in the past. Rahul has excelled as an opener but has also shown versatility by adapting to the middle order for India, where he bats at No. 5 in ODIs.

Interestingly, if Axar assumes the captaincy for Delhi, it will also impact Faf du Plessis, who has captained the Royal Challengers Bangalore for three seasons. The South African star was picked by Delhi at his base price of Rs 2 crore. Faf will now play as a specialist batter under Axar’s leadership, adding another layer of flexibility to the squad. The developments signal an exciting phase for Axar Patel, who will not only have a leadership role in the India T20I series but also for Delhi in the upcoming IPL season.
