Mukesh Ambani-led Jio launched its 5G services in October 2022, and has since expanded its 5G network in almost every corner of the country.
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio, which changed the face of India’s telecom sector with its competitive tariff plans, and became the country’s largest telecom provider within a short span of time, has achieved another milestone, this time at the global level. According to reports, Jio has become the second largest 5G telecom provider in the world, surging ahead of several global and regional player, including its main competitor, Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel.
Jio becomes world’s second-largest 5G provider
Jio launched its 5G services in October 2022, and has since expanded its 5G network in almost every corner of the country. Airtel, which also launched is own 5G services around the same time, is lagging behind Jio in terms of both network coverage as well as subscriber base.
According to Reliance Jio’s recently announced third-quarter report of FY 2024-25, the company has 170 million (17 crore) 5G users across the country. Jio added around 40 million (4 crore) 5G users in the third quarter, while its userbase was 130 million (13 crore) at the end of quarter two of FY 2024-25, as per the company’s Q3 results.
In contrast, Jio’s main competitor, Airtel, had a 5G userbase of close to 90 million (9 crore) at the end of the second quarter in June 2024.
Reliance Jio announced that the company has become the world’s second largest 5G telecom operator, behind China’s China Mobile. As per Jio, it witnessed a 40 percent increase in wireless data traffic on its 5G network in the third quarter.
Reliance Jio launches new plans
Reliance Jio, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is India’s largest telecom provider known for its pocket-friendly tariff plans. Recently, the Mukesh Ambani-owned company launched a wide range of new tariff plans, including two new long-term validity plans to counter the growing competition from rival providers, particularly state-owned BSNL, which has witnessed a resurgence of late.
Jio’s new tariff plans are geared towards subscribers who prefer long-term validity along with unlimited high-speed 5G data to avoid the hassle of monthly recharges. We are talking about Jio’s Rs 3,999 and Rs 3,599 plan, both carrying a validity of 365 days and offering unlimited 5G data, unlimited voice calls to any network within India, free SMS, and more.
