The Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered the Postal Department to not only refund 50 paise but also pay Rs 10,000 as compensation for mental agony, misconduct and deficiency in service. Apart from this, the Kanchipuram District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has also ordered the Department of Posts (DOP) to bear the cost of Rs 5,000.

Complainant A. As per the intention he had paid Rs 30 in cash for a registered letter at Posichalur post office near Kanchipuram on December 13, 2023. But only Rs 29.50 was shown on the receipt. At this time the complainant expressed his desire to send a certain amount through UPI. However, due to some technical difficulties the postal employees rejected it.
Not only this, he has said in the complaint that transactions worth lakhs of rupees are taking place every day and due to lack of proper accounting, the government is also incurring losses. In his complaint (postal department not returning 50 paise) he said that this is illegal and has caused him 'severe mental distress'. The department has told the Commission that due to some technical problems at that time it was not able to accept payments from customers through digital means. Due to this, money was taken from them in cash.

After hearing both the parties, the Consumer Commission while giving its decision said that charging additional 50 paise (postal department not returning 50 paise) by the post office due to software related problem is unfair under the Consumer Protection Act. The District Consumer Commission directed the DOP to refund Rs 50 paise to the complainant and ordered Rs 10,000 as compensation for mental agony, misconduct and deficiency in service.
Apart from this, the Kanchipuram District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has also asked the Department of Posts (DOP) to pay Rs 5,000 towards the litigation expenses. The complainant had demanded the DoP to return his 50 paise, Rs 2.50 lakh for 'mental anguish' and Rs 10,000 as litigation expenses.
