The Department of School Education and Literacy has issued a notification on new norms and procedures for teacher education programmes. According to the notification, higher educational institutions should obtain necessary approval from the National Teacher Education Council and the concerned universities to conduct the four-year integrated teacher education program.
The guidelines issued by the department include regulations related to curriculum structure, admission process, qualification of teaching staff, infrastructure, laboratories, libraries and school based training. Students seeking admission to the program must fulfill the qualifications prescribed by the concerned university or examination body.
According to the guidelines, institutions conducting teacher education programs should adhere to norms related to teacher-student ratio, research activities and collaboration with schools. A regular monitoring and evaluation process will be implemented to ensure quality, the department said.
The notification mentions that institutions wishing to start teacher education programs should submit applications within the prescribed period. The department said that a decision on approval will be taken after reviewing the applications.
