Now ‘Kerala’ will be known by the name ‘Kerala’, Modi cabinet approved the proposal of the state government.

New Delhi, 24 February. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved the state government’s proposal to change the name of the south coastal state ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’. After the approval of the Cabinet, the President of India will send a bill called the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 to the Kerala State Assembly for consideration under Article 3 of the Constitution.

After receiving the opinion of the Kerala State Assembly, the Government of India will take further action and obtain the President’s recommendation to introduce the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 to change the name of the state of ‘Kerala’ to ‘Kerala’ in the Parliament.

Kerala Assembly passed the resolution on June 24, 2024

The Kerala Assembly had passed a resolution on June 24, 2024 to change the name of the state ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’, which is as follows – “The name of our state is ‘Keralaam’ in Malayalam language. States were formed on the basis of language on November 1, 1956. Kerala Piravi Day is also on November 1. Since the time of the national freedom struggle, there has been a demand for the formation of United Kerala for the people speaking Malayalam language. There has been a strong demand. But this Assembly unanimously appeals to the Central Government to take immediate steps to amend the name to ‘Kerala’ in the First Schedule of the Constitution.”

Subsequently, the Government of Kerala has requested the Government of India to take necessary steps to amend the First Schedule of the Constitution to change the name of the State from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’ in accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution. Article 3 of the Constitution provides for the change of names of existing states. According to Article 3, Parliament can change the name of any state by law.

The matter of changing the name of the State of ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’ was considered in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and with the approval of Amit Shah, Union Home Minister and Union Minister for Cooperation, the draft note to the Cabinet for changing the name of the State of ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’ was circulated to the Legislative Department and Department of Legal Affairs of the Ministry of Law and Justice for comments. The Department of Legal Affairs and Legislative Department, Ministry of Law and Justice have agreed to the proposal to change the name of the state ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’.
