Petrol is expensive but no tension, now 1 in every 10 scooters is electric, big change for middle class

EV Two Wheeler Sales: The demand for electric vehicles in India is now rapidly reaching new heights. Especially the changes that have taken place in the two-wheeler segment have changed both the budget and thinking of middle class families. The increasing tension between America, Israel and Iran has also accelerated this trend.

1 in 10 two-wheelers now electric

The figures for March 2026 are shocking. Nearly 1 in every 10 two-wheelers sold across the country has been electric. This shows that people are now increasingly moving towards electric options to avoid the rising prices and uncertainty of petrol and diesel.

While the share of electric two-wheelers was around 6% at the beginning of the financial year, by March it increased to more than 9%. The special thing is that this surge has come at a time when government subsidies are going to be reduced from July 2026.

Oil crisis and war changed people’s thinking

The ongoing tension between America, Israel and Iran has increased concerns about global oil supply. For this reason, people now want to avoid depending on petrol and diesel. This is the reason why there is a sudden increase in demand for electric vehicles.

Sales made a new record in March

According to vehicle data, more than 1.7 lakh electric two-wheelers have been sold in March 2026. Last year in the same month this figure was around 1.27 lakh. That means there has been a tremendous increase of about 36% this year. If we look at the figures for the entire year, total sales have increased from 11.11 lakh units to 13.34 lakh units, which shows a growth of about 20%.

Shock to Ola, TVS wins

There has been a big change among the companies in the electric two-wheeler market. Ola Electric, which was at number one, has now slipped to fourth place. TVS has regained the first position, while Bajaj also remains in a strong position. Ather Energy has moved up to the third position and has registered a massive growth of 81% in its sales.

Demand will increase further, companies are giving discounts

Experts believe that the fear of inflation and shortage of petrol and diesel will continuously push people towards electric. According to the report, “this trend may continue in future also.” Companies are also giving big discounts to attract customers. Ola says that the energy crisis has forced India to think rapidly towards becoming self-reliant.

Government gave relief, increased subsidy

The government has extended the purchase subsidy of ₹5,000 on electric two-wheelers from March 31 to July 31, 2026. This decision was taken because the funds earmarked for this sector could not be fully utilised. However, this relief has not been given for three-wheelers. At the same time, there is dissatisfaction among startup companies regarding the PLI scheme, because at present only big companies are getting its benefit.
