Now what will happen to Rs 9 crore? Mustafizur will have to return KKR’s money! understand the rules

The sudden directive from BCCI has put Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a difficult situation ahead of the IPL 2026 season. After tough competition in the auction, KKR bought Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for Rs 9.20 crore, beating Chennai Super Kings. Now the team may have to release him even before the start of the season, even though he has not bowled a single ball yet.

Usually, as per the rules of IPL auction, the franchise’s money is locked after buying a player but Mustafizur’s case is different. Here the player himself has not withdrawn his name nor is he injured, but BCCI has directed to release him due to diplomatic and security reasons.

What will happen to KKR’s money back?

According to the league’s governing rules, when the BCCI decides to drop a player from the team for non-cricket reasons, there is a provision for the concerned franchise to get back the entire amount spent on that player. In such a situation, KKR is hopeful of getting the amount of Rs 9.20 crore back in its purse.

This matter falls under the category of ‘Force Majeure’. Force majeure is a situation when a party is unable to fulfill its contract due to an extraordinary and uncontrollable event. In this case, KKR has no obligation to honor the contract with Mustafizur, as he is being removed from the IPL on the instructions of BCCI.

However, if Mustafizur demands any kind of compensation from KKR or BCCI, it could become a legal issue on which the situation is not clear yet.

Will KKR get a chance to find a player again?

This refund is also very important for KKR because with this the team will be able to enter the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP) or any quick replacement draft with its full financial strength. If this amount is not recovered, KKR will have to suffer a situation for which they are not responsible and it will be almost impossible for them to find a replacement of Mustafizur’s caliber.

BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia has hinted that KKR will be allowed to find replacement players, although he did not clarify what the process would be and when the money would be returned.

It is likely that KKR will have the entire Rs 9.20 crore available to find a replacement, but finding a foreign fast bowler of Mustafizur’s quality as a specialist bowler in the death overs could prove to be a big challenge for the team.
