NSE's total number of unique investors crosses 11 crore for the first time
The total number of unique investors (unique PANs) on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) has crossed 11 crore for the first time and the total client accounts registered on the exchange have now crossed 21 crore, it was announced on Wednesday.
NSE has seen a boom in investor registrations in recent years due to a surge in stock market participation, increasing 3.6 times in the last five years.
It took 14 years for NSE to reach 1 crore investors since it started operations in 1994.
The pace picked up after that, it took almost seven years for the next 1 crore registrations, then 3.5 years for the next 1 crore and a little more than a year to add the fourth crore.
“The rate of growth has since increased significantly, with every additional 1 crore investors joining in about 6-7 months, compared to the previous 1 crore investors who joined the stock market through direct channels,” NSE said. “Reflects the change in investor enthusiasm and participation.” The exchange said that over the past five months, daily new unique investor registrations have consistently ranged between 47,000 and 73,000.
This growth is driven by multiple factors, including strong market performance, increasing investor awareness, financial inclusion efforts and rapid progress in digitalization. In 2024, the Nifty 50 index returned 8.8 percent, while the Nifty 500 index saw an impressive gain of 15.2 percent. Indian markets have had positive returns for the last nine consecutive years. Over the five-year period ending December 2024, the Nifty 50 and Nifty 500 have generated annual returns of 14.2 per cent and 17.8 per cent, respectively, further boosting investor confidence.
The market capitalization of NSE-listed companies has increased almost 6 times from Rs 73.5 lakh crore on May 1, 2014 to Rs 425 lakh crore now.
