ICC has made a major change in the format of the Men’s ODI World Cup 2027. Now ‘Super Series’ and ‘Super-7’ rounds will be played for the first time in the tournament. Know how teams will reach the semi-finals in the new format and what has changed.

ICC ODI WC 2027 Updated format explained: ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 will now be played in a completely new style. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made a major change in the format of the tournament and decided to start ‘Super-7’ and ‘Super Series’ for the first time. After this change, the excitement of the World Cup will be at its peak from the first match itself and every match will directly impact the race for the semi-finals.

14 teams will participate in this tournament to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, but only 12 teams will get a chance to play in the main group stage. That means the journey of the two teams will end even before the main round starts. The ICC gave its official approval to this new format after its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on July 15.

ICC ODI WC: New format approved in AGM

There was a continuous discussion going on for the last few days regarding the format of One Day World Cup 2027 (ICC ODI WC 2027). It was believed that like the 2003 World Cup, this time too the format of two groups of 7 teams each, Super-6 and then semi-finals would be adopted. However, a major decision was taken in the ICC Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Edinburgh and the ‘Super Series’ and ‘Super-7’ rounds were approved. The number of teams will remain 14, but only 12 teams will play in the main group stage.

This will be the new format of ICC ODI WC 2027

Under the new format, the three lowest ranked teams among the 14 teams that qualified first will play a ‘Super Series’. Only the winning team of this round-robin stage will advance to the main tournament, while the remaining two teams will be eliminated. After this, the 12 teams will be divided into two groups of 6 each, where a total of seven teams, including the top-3 teams of each group and the fourth-placed teams in both the groups, will make it to the ‘Super-7’ round.

ICC ODI WC: ‘Super-7’ will decide the path to semi-finals

The seven teams reaching the Super-7 round will play against each other in round-robin format. After this stage, the top four teams in the points table will advance to the semi-finals. In the first semi-final, the first and fourth placed teams will face each other, while in the second semi-final, the second and third placed teams will face each other. After this the final match will be played between the two winning teams.
