Odisha Rajya Sabha elections: BJD-Congress candidate on fourth seat

Political temperature rose on the fourth seat of Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha. BJD-Congress declared Dr. Datteshwar Hota as the common candidate, while BJP’s strategy and the mathematics of MLA votes is now playing a decisive role.

Odisha Politics: Out of the four seats in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha, the fourth seat has now emerged as the most important. The contest on this seat is not only a game of numbers but also of political strategy and alliances. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress have shown a new political alliance by declaring the name of Dr. Datteshwar Hota as a common candidate. After this, political turmoil has intensified in the state and the concern of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has increased.

If we look at the data of Rajya Sabha elections, two seats of BJP are considered almost certain, while one seat of BJD is considered certain. In such a situation, the contest on the fourth seat is becoming interesting, because it can change the political equation in Odisha.

Political stir increased due to common candidate

BJD declared Dr. Datteshwar Hota as the common candidate for the fourth seat, soon after which Congress also announced its support. Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhakta Charan Das said that this decision is a step taken towards improving mutual relations and maintaining political coordination.

Former Chief Minister and BJD leader Naveen Patnaik appealed to all parties to support Dr. Hota and send him to Rajya Sabha. He said that supporting a common candidate will strengthen the political stability and spirit of cooperation in Odisha.

Political eye on BJP’s strategy

After the announcement of the common candidate, now everyone’s eyes are on BJP’s strategy. The question being raised in political circles is whether BJP will also field its candidate for the fourth seat or will it play political tricks by fielding a big and influential face.

Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal said that the party has sent all the information to the parliamentary committee and now the committee’s decision is awaited. Political experts believe that if BJP fields a third candidate then allegations of cross voting and horse trading may also come to the fore.

vote counting

According to the current mathematics of the Assembly, 30 votes are required for a candidate to win the Rajya Sabha elections. BJD is left with 18 votes apart from its assured seat. The support of Congress and one CPI MLA makes a total of 15 votes. In this way, a total of 33 votes are cast in support of Dr. Hota, which takes him to a strong position.

Whereas BJP has 82 MLAs, but to win the fourth seat they will need at least eight additional votes. Apart from this, the party will have to collect six more votes even after getting the support of suspended BJD MLAs Arvind Mahapatra and Sanatan Mahakud. Due to this mathematics, political strategy and alliance can play a decisive role on the fourth seat.

potential horse trading

Political analysts believe that if BJP fields its third candidate, the possibility of strategies like cross voting and horse trading will increase. In such a situation, the fourth seat will not only be a game of numbers but will also be a test of political cunning, alliances and personal support.

Experts believe that this seat is also an opportunity to test the growing coordination between BJD and Congress. If the common candidate wins, it will be considered the first strong sign towards lasting cooperation between the two parties. At the same time, BJP’s defeat or victory will also decide the party’s political position in Odisha.
