Off the field, Sheikh Hasina continues to dominate Bangladesh

Desk: While Tariq Rahman’s party has won a landslide victory in the Bangladesh elections, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s influence has also remained intact. A large number of votes were rejected in Awami League strongholds. Furthermore, in areas considered to be Sheikh Hasina’s dominant position, a significant number of votes were cast against the referendum. This comes despite the Awami League not being allowed to contest the elections in Bangladesh this time.

According to Bangladesh Daily, the No vote dominated in Sheikh Hasina’s strongholds, including districts like Gopalganj, Chittagong, Bandarban, Rangamati, and Khagrachari. In fact, Muhammad Yunus’s government had campaigned heavily in favor of a Yes vote in the referendum. Therefore, the overwhelming majority of No votes in these areas is a major setback for the government.

According to the Bangladesh Election Commission, around 2.5 lakh votes were cast in favor of No in Gopalganj. Similarly, 1.7 lakh votes were cast in favor of Yes. Similarly, in Bandarban, 71,417 votes were cast in favor of Yes and 90,156 votes were cast in favor of No. In Chittagong, 1.25 lakh votes were cast in favor of No and 80,580 votes were cast in favor of Yes.

Following Sheikh Hasina’s coup in 2024, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus. The primary purpose of the interim government was to hold elections. Upon assuming power, Yunus banned the Awami League, preventing it from contesting the general elections.

Sheikh Hasina has questioned the entire electoral process. She claims the elections were conducted fraudulently and lacked public support. She claims people did not come out to vote because their own party was not allowed to contest. According to the Bangladesh Election Commission, 60 percent of the vote was cast this time. According to 2025 data, Bangladesh has a total of 127 million voters.
