Aishwarya Rai Nimbooda Song in School Textbook: While new controversies about school textbooks often crop up, a recent incident in Odisha has taken everyone by surprise. A very popular Bollywood song has been included in the Class 5 English textbook used in schools in the state. The famous song ‘Nimbuda Nimbuda’ from the blockbuster film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ starring superstars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan has now become part of children’s curriculum. This has created a controversy.
Heavy criticism on social media
People are expressing their displeasure as to why children’s books are including such movie songs instead of poetry or educational text. The education department and the publishers of this book have been heavily criticized on social media. At the same time, some are of the opinion that such a ‘Bollywood touch’ in the education system is harmful to children’s mental development and moral values.
How exactly did this unique event unfold?
This was noticed by the parents of a student studying in a government school in Odisha. While flipping through the pages of a Class 5 workbook (practice book), he found the lyrics of the song ‘Nimbuda Nimbuda’ printed in it. Instead of folk songs or poems, in this particular case those commercial Bollywood songs were given the same words. Surprised and worried, the parent took a picture of the leaf and shared it on social media. The post quickly went viral and generated a lot of reactions.

Excitement in the education department
After this issue came into discussion, the Odisha Education Department was in a frenzy. After preliminary inquiries and growing controversy, education department officials distanced themselves from the matter and shifted all the blame to private publishers. The department clarified that the book is not part of the syllabus prescribed by the State Government or the authorized body (Board); It is a supplementary workbook used in select schools and published by a private organization. The administration has promised to take strict action against the school and the publisher concerned.
Is ‘Bollywood Cha Tadaka’ suitable for school curriculum?
This incident has raised a question mark regarding the revision of books and quality control in the Indian education system. Elementary school children have very young and impressionable minds. At this age they should be taught moral values, biographies of great people and elements of folk culture. If movie songs like ‘Nimbuda Nimbuda’ are included in the books in the name of making them more attractive, it can adversely affect children’s language and thinking process.
