Romeo and Juliet actress Olivia Hussey Eisley dies at 73 due to cancer

New Delhi: Renowned actress Olivia Hussey Eisley, best known for her role in Romeo and Juliet, passed away at 73 on December 27. She breathed her last surrounded by her loved ones in her home. The actress, as per the San Francisco Chronicle, died due to cancer.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, which reoccurred in 2018. The critics and audiences, alike much appreciated her performance as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet.

Actress Oliva Hussey Eisley passed away at the age of 73 due to breast cancer on December 27. She rose to fame with Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film, Romeo and Juliet, for which she even won a Golden Globe. In a statement by her family on Instagram, they confirmed her passing and called her a “remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her”.

Oliva Hussey Eisley was just 15 when she starred in Oscar-winning adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, also starring Leonard Whiting. In 2023, Hussey and Whiting filed a lawsuit against the studio alleging child abuse over the controversial nude scene featuring the actors, stating that they were minor at that time. However, later that year, a judge dismissed the case.

Olivia received a New Star of the Year Award at Golden Globe. She later starred in 1974 slasher film, Black Christmastelevision show Jesus of Nazareth, 1990 miniseries adaptation of Stephan King’s It, 1990 horror sequel Psycho IV: The Beginning and the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nileamong others. She also lend her voice to several Star Wars video games and played the notable role Talia al Ghul in DC animated movies and series.

For the unversed, Oliva Hussey Eisley is survived by her husband David Eisley, their three children and grandson.
