Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker received Khel Ratna Award, D Gukesh, Harmanpreet Singh and para athlete Praveen Kumar were also honored.
Two Olympic medal winning shooter Manu Bhaker was honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. President Draupadi Murmu gave him this honor in a program organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Apart from this, chess champion D Gukesh was awarded the Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2024. Along with Manu-Gukesh, Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and para-athlete Praveen Kumar were also honored with the same award for their contribution in the field of sports.
Manu Bhaker received Khel Ratna award
Manu Bhaker was the last athlete to be honored with the Khel Ratna Award. When Manu Bhaker came to collect the medal amid loud applause, happiness was clearly visible on her face. At the age of 22, Manu Bhaker won the bronze medal in the women's 10 meter air pistol event at the Paris 2024 Olympics and became the first athlete to win a medal in shooting. After this, Manu Bhakar along with Sarabjot Singh won the bronze medal in the 10 meter air pistol mixed team event. Manu Bhaker became the first athlete in Indian history since independence to win two medals in one Olympics.
Para-athletics Praveen Kumar received honour.
Apart from this, para athlete Praveen had brought glory to the country by winning gold medal in T64 category in Paris Paralympics. This category is for those players who participate in competitions with the help of artificial legs. Praveen is one of the four athletes who have received the Khel Ratna Award. Praveen Kumar had won gold in men's high jump T64 category with an Asian record. The 21-year-old Indian para-athlete cleared a distance of 2.08 meters in the final for his second Paralympic medal. He won the silver medal in Tokyo 2020.
Harmanpreet Singh received Khel Ratna
Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh was given the Khel Ratna Award for 2024. Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh played an important role in his team winning a medal in the Paris Olympics. He also won the title of top scorer of the tournament with 10 goals.
D Gukesh got the honor
18 year old Gukesh created history and won the title of World Chess Champion. He created history by becoming the youngest person to win the World Chess Championship title by defeating defending champion Ding Liren of China. Gukesh received honor from the President. Gukesh was the first athlete to receive the honor during the ceremony.
Arjuna Award to 32 players
Along with this, 32 players received Arjun Award. In the lifetime category, Sucha Singh and para swimmer Muralikant Rajaram Petkar were given the Arjuna Award. While badminton coach S Muraleedharan and football coach Armando Agnello Colaco were honored with the Dronacharya Award.
