Mind reading gadget Omi introduced at CES 2025, can this technology do anything?
Obnews Tech Desk: Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has been under research for a long time, and a new gadget, Omi, has been introduced at CES 2025. It is being claimed that this device can read your thoughts and decode them.
Omi: What is this new device?
American startup Based Hardware has launched this AI wearable. You can wear it as a pendant or necklace. It can be activated by saying “Hey Omi”. However, in listening mode it does not even require a wake word.
This device is a combination of AI and BCI. However, at present it is not BCI based, rather most of the work is dependent on AI. It works like Rabbit R1 and Human Pin. It has been provided with GPT-4o, which gives personalized advice to the users.
How does it work?
Omi can be implanted near the forehead using brain interface medical tape. It helps answer users' questions, schedule meetings, create ToDo lists, and do real-time translation. This device always remains in listening mode, due to which questions are being raised regarding privacy. However, the company claims that the data will remain safe in local storage and transparency has been ensured on the open-source platform.
Future Plans and Price
The price of Omi has been kept at 89 US dollars (about Rs 7,640). For now, it's an audio-only AI device. The company says that in future it will be made capable of reading brain waves. However, this feature is not completely ready and will be activated later.

Will Omi become a game-changer?
If BCI technology is successfully implemented, Omi could become a game-changing device. But for now, it's just another AI device. Given the AI features already built into smartphones, using an additional device may be challenging for people.
