On language dispute, CM Fadnavis said, only Marathi is mandatory in Maharashtra.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ clear stand on language dispute

Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has once again expressed his views on the language dispute in the state. He clarified that only Marathi language is considered mandatory in Maharashtra, while other languages are welcome, but will not be made mandatory. The statement assumes significance, especially after the BJP government last year rolled back the decision to include Hindi as a third language in Class 1, when protests had escalated.

Chief Minister’s statement on the necessity of language

Speaking at the inaugural session of the 99th All India Marathi Sahitya Sammelan held in Satara, Fadnavis said the issue of essentiality of the language remains a topic of wide discussion in the society. He said, “As the Chief Minister, I want to make it clear that only Marathi is compulsory in Maharashtra. Other languages are not compulsory. Students have the right to learn any Indian language of their choice. The only dispute was about where to start teaching the third language.”

Mention of Mahavikas Aghadi government report

Fadnavis said a report during the Mahavikas Aghadi government had recommended making Hindi compulsory from class one, which his government had earlier supported. But in view of the widespread debate and opposition on this issue, a committee was formed under the chairmanship of Narendra Jadhav. The Chief Minister also reiterated that only Marathi is considered a compulsory language in the state.

welcome international languages

The Chief Minister also mentioned that he welcomes languages like English, French and Spanish as they are international languages. “However, it would be unfair if we oppose Indian languages,” he said. Fadnavis stressed the need to give respect to Indian languages and said that all languages should get equal importance.
