On the instigation of ChatGPT, the son murdered his mother; Case registered against OpenAI

San Francisco. The family of an 83-year-old woman from Connecticut in the US has sued ChatGPT maker OpenAI and its business partner Microsoft, alleging that the artificial intelligence chatbot increased their son’s ‘delusions’ and instigated him to murder his mother. Steen-Erik Soelberg, 56, a former technology employee, beat and strangled his mother, Suzanne Adams, to death in their Connecticut home in early August, police said. Mother and son lived in this house.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday by Adams’ family in a San Francisco court, alleges that OpenAI designed and distributed a defective product that perpetuated a user’s delusions about his mother.

The lawsuit says that during all of these conversations, ChatGPT repeated the same dangerous message that Stein-Erich should not trust anyone in his life except ChatGPT. The lawsuit states that this (ChatGPT) fostered Stein-Erich’s emotional dependency, as well as systematically portraying those around her as the enemy. Chatgpt tells him that his mother is keeping an eye on him. Chatgpt tells him that people associated with him, police officers and even friends are agents working against him.

OpenAI did not comment on these allegations. However a statement has been issued saying, ‘This is an extremely tragic situation, and we will review the documents to get the full details of the case.’ That said, we are constantly improving ChatGPT’s training to recognize and respond to signs of mental or emotional distress and actually help people. We are also working with mental health experts to strengthen ChatGPT’s responses to sensitive situations.
