In the year 2021, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had fielded Parno Mitra in the elections against veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Tapas Roy. Tapas Roy, who won the election by defeating Parno Mitra, later joined BJP. Now Parno Mitra has joined TMC. Parno Mitra, who joined BJP in 2019, has joined TMC after 6 years and there is talk that she can also be fielded in the assembly elections. She was not that active in politics after losing the elections in 2021 but now just before the elections she is becoming active again with the new party.
Parno Mitra, who reached Trinamool Bhawan on Friday, took membership of the party in the presence of Chandrima Bhattacharya, Minister of State in the West Bengal government and TMC leader Jaiprakash Majumdar. Parno Mitra, who once blamed TMC for hindering Bengal’s development, today said, ‘I am joining TMC after being impressed by Mamata Banerjee’s development work. I joined BJP 6 years ago but things did not go my way. People make mistakes and I think now is the time to correct those mistakes. I feel fortunate to have joined TMC.

Who is Parno Mitra?
Parno, who started her acting career in 2007, is a well-known Bengali TV artist. She has also worked in many Bengali films and her face is quite famous among the people of West Bengal. After working on the small screen, Parno also left her mark through Bengali films like ‘Mach Mishti’, ‘Ami O Amar Girlfriend’ and ‘Ranjana Ami Ar Asab Na’.
BJP, which was preparing for the 2021 assembly elections, was bringing new people into politics. In this sequence, about a dozen film and TV artists had joined BJP. BJP’s effort was to bring women forward to challenge Mamata Banerjee’s women’s narrative. Then apart from Parno Mitra, artists like Moumita Gupta, Rupanjana Mitra, Rupa Bhattacharya and Kanchana Moitra had joined BJP. Then Parno Mitra had said, ‘Bengal is lagging behind in matters of education, health and industry. I believe that only BJP can solve these problems.

What happened in the 2021 elections?
Parno Mitra, who joined BJP in the year 2019, was fielded by BJP against veteran leader Tapas Roy from Badanagar assembly seat of North 24 Parganas district. This is the same seat from where Jyoti Basu won the elections 6 times. Parno Mitra, who had been contesting against Tapas Roy, who has been winning continuously since 2011, had tried very hard but could not win the election. Tapas Roy’s votes increased and he won the election by getting 85,615 votes. Parno Mitra got 50,468 votes and stood second.
Regarding Parno joining TMC, BJP leader Rudranil Ghosh said, ‘She was not politically active after contesting elections in 2021. In such a situation, it is wrong to say that she has left BJP and joined TMC. She was not politically active, hence her joining TMC will not cause any harm to BJP.
