One Nation, One Election: JPC will reach Panaji and Lucknow

Proposed The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 And Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 With the aim of comprehensive discussion on various aspects of ‘One nation, one election’ The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed on the subject will conduct a study tour of Panaji, the capital of Goa, and Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, from July 10 to 15, 2026.

Chairman of the Committee P.P Choudhary The purpose of this tour led by the Government is to comprehensively study the possible impact of the proposed bills on the country’s democratic system, electoral system and governance system and to receive suggestions from various stakeholders.

During the study tour, the committee will take forward the process of dialogue at the regional level and hold detailed consultations with high constitutional officials, elected public representatives, representatives of various political parties, senior officials of the state administration, representatives of financial and educational institutions, academicians, state bar councils, advocate associations of the respective high courts, various professional organizations and representatives of civil society. In these meetings, possible changes in the electoral system, administrative system, financial implications, constitutional aspects and the impact on the democratic process will be discussed.

This study tour of the Committee is the next phase of the series of regional consultations being organized across the country. Earlier, the Committee had organized similar study tours and consultation meetings in Mumbai, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Shimla, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar. In these meetings, Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers of various states and union territories, presiding officers of legislatures, leaders of political parties, banks, public sector undertakings and representatives of various regulatory bodies had presented their suggestions.

Representatives of Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Chandigarh and National Capital Territory of Delhi had actively participated in these consultation meetings held earlier. Other than this Reserve Bank of India, Securities and Exchange Board of India And National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Officials and experts from leading organizations also presented their views before the committee.

The committee hopes that useful suggestions will be received from various sections during the upcoming study tour to Panaji and Lucknow. Based on these suggestions the committee proposed The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 And Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 But it will move towards making its report more comprehensive and practical.

Discussions are going on at various levels across the country regarding the concept of ‘one nation, one election’. In such a situation, this study tour of the Joint Parliamentary Committee is being considered an important step towards incorporating the opinions of different parties and making the democratic process more inclusive.
