One-ton-a-day free durian giveaway draws long queues in Singapore

A stall in Singapore is attracting large crowds with a giveaway of up to 1,000 kilograms of free durians every day.

Durian Ninja at Blk 827 Tampines Street 81 has been running the event since June 19, distributing 800-1,000kg of kampong durians each day. The durians are sourced mainly from Malaysia, namely Bentong in Pahang and Muar in Johor, according to AsiaOne.

The event has sparked long queues around the area, according to videos posted to social media.

The stall owner said each person was initially allowed to take three durians but the limit was later reduced to two to ensure fairness for others, per Mothership.

Malaysia is currently in its peak durian season and experiencing an oversupply of the fruit, which has been dubbed a “durian tsunami.” Durian prices there have plummeted as a result.

Durian Ninja’s owner said there is enough supply to continue the giveaway until sometime in August.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging younger people to try durians and also giving back to the community.

“More than half of the people in line are elderly, but we are also seeing young people join the queue, which is exactly what we hoped to see,” the owner told Shin Min Daily News.
