ONGC-Tripura Power Company is lighting up North-East India with clean electricity

Agartala. Today a media team from Chhattisgarh led by Press Information Bureau, Raipur visited ONGC-Tripura Power Company (OTPC) located in Gomati district of Tripura. Tripura Power Plant is a natural gas based power plant which supplies electricity to Tripura as well as six other North-Eastern states.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of OTPC, Shri Sanjay Garhwal said that with the objective of making proper use of the available gas in Tripura and supplying electricity to the power deficient areas of the North-Eastern states of India, the infrastructure has been set up by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). ONGC Tripura Power Company (OTPC) in collaboration with Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) and Government of Tripura was formed on 18 September 2008 for setting up 726.6 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) at Palatana, Tripura.

He said that the commercial operation of the first block of 363.3 MW of this power plant was started from January 4, 2014 and the second block of 363.3 MW was started from March 24, 2015. Shri Garhwal said that being the largest plant in the north-eastern states, it alone supplies 25 percent of the total electricity.

Shri Sanjay Garhwal said that based on the norms set by the CSR Board, OTPC is spending Rs 03 crore annually on CSR. This expenditure, which constitutes 80 per cent of the total CSR, goes towards empowerment of rural women, construction of schools and providing sanitary pads to about 3000 girl students every month within a radius of 10 to 25 kilometers of the plant. Apart from this, it helps rural students in preparation for exams like IIT and JEE. Apart from this, it is also providing free medicines to the people by examining their health through 4 mobile health vans.

Project Head of OTPC Mr. Tapas Bhowmik gave detailed information regarding the establishment of OTPC plant. He told that big machinery for this plant has been brought to Tripura via Bangladesh.

Shri Bhowmik said that being based on gas, this project is supplying clean power to the national transmission grid. Reduction in carbon-dioxide emissions due to supply of clean electricity. Export of clean electricity increases environmental emissions. Shri Bhowmik said that coal, which is a non-renewable resource, is saved which can be used for other purposes. Reduction in carbon dioxide emissions reduces displacement of common people and conserves land.
