The world’s largest GenAI chatbot ChatGPT is currently down globally, leaving users who have grown accustomed to quick fixes from the chatbot in a frenzy.

According to outage tracker website Downdetector, about 4,000 Indian users submitted reports of ChatGPT being non-functional in the past hour. It is pertinent to mention that ChatGPT has 300 Mn weekly active users worldwide.

On the website, the web server is currently reporting a bad gateway error with a reference code 502. The technical glitch generally happens when one server gets an invalid response from another server. The issue typically arises when servers are overloaded, are undergoing network problems, configuration errors, or facing temporary outages on upstream servers.

The company said that ChatGPT is facing a “Partial Outage” today and it is currently investigating the issue.  “We are currently experiencing elevated error rates for ChatGPT. We are currently investigating,” OpenAI’s Status said.

Yesterday, the Microsoft-backed company said that it will be one of the founding members of Stargate Project, a new company which intends to invest $500 Bn over the next four years building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the US. Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Oracle will also play the part of “initial technology partners” for the entity.

“We will begin deploying $100 Bn immediately…. This project will not only support the re-industrialisation of the United States but also provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of America and its allies,” it said in a statement on January 22.

For ChatGPT, this marked the fifth instance of a major outage since December. The longest instance of this outage was on December 11, when ChatGPT was non-operational for 4:10 hours.
