  • The misconception that ‘country liquor is safe’ is false; Cancer risk clear

A comprehensive study by the Tata Memorial Center has concluded that consumption of locally produced liquors such as mahua, kharra and toddy is misconceived and increases the risk of oral cancer significantly. The study revealed that the risk of mouth (buccal mucosa) cancer was about 45 percent higher among non-drinkers than among non-drinkers.

The study, conducted between 2010 and 2023, compared 1,803 patients diagnosed with oral cancer with an equal number of healthy individuals. The study included 30 types of local liquor such as mahua, kharra, toddy, desi Daru and handi, along with international liquors.

More than 15 percent risk in ‘these’ states

A state-wise study found that states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh had an alcohol-related risk of oral cancer of more than 15 percent.

Our analysis revealed that more than one case of total buccal mucosa in India was associated with alcoholism. The risk has also been found to be relatively higher in states with high alcohol consumption.
