The total cost of this project is expected to be Rs 12,159 crore. On an average, each airport is estimated to cost Rs 100 crore for construction. These airports will be developed under ‘Challenge Mode’, which will create healthy competition between different cities and states. The government has ensured that priority will be given to cities that show first progress in terms of building excellent facilities, ensuring safety and driving rapid development. The initiative aims to extend the benefits of air connectivity to rural areas and even small towns in India.

A budget of Rs 28,840 crore for the ‘Udan 2.0’ scheme
Under the ‘Udan’ scheme, significant progress has already been made towards connecting small towns and cities by air. As part of the expansion of the scheme, the government will now provide additional funds of Rs 28,840 crore. The scheme will remain operational till 2026, facilitating air connectivity to a larger number of cities. This initiative will not only make travel more affordable, but will also provide citizens with better options for long-distance travel.

Plan for 200 new and modern helipads
The Union Cabinet has also approved construction of 200 new and modern helipads across the country. Helicopters will be established as the main means of transportation in hilly regions, North East India and island regions where road construction faces major challenges. To achieve this, the government has earmarked a budget of Rs 3,661 crore. This initiative will facilitate the movement of people in these remote areas and also increase the coverage of air services.
Extension of IVFRT scheme by 5 years
The ‘International Visitor Border Reserve Tracking’ (IVFRT) scheme has been extended by five years. The scheme will now be in effect from 1st April 2026 to 31st March 2031. The main objective of the scheme is to modernize India’s immigration and visa system; This will make the visa process easier and faster for visitors from abroad. A total of Rs 1,800 crore has been sanctioned for the scheme, which will further improve security and immigration processes.
Approval of new environmental commitments
Many important decisions related to environment were also taken during the Cabinet meeting. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has set new environmental goals for the period 2025 to 2035. The main objectives of these goals are to reduce pollution and conserve natural resources. The Cabinet approved these commitments, paving the way for a new direction for India’s environmental future.
