More than 82,285 patients are on the waiting list for organ transplant in India, with kidney transplants accounting for the highest number of cases. In the last five years, 72,993 transplants have been successfully performed, but nearly 3,000 patients have lost their lives during the wait. The number of organ donations is still limited, and women are more willing than men to become donors.

According to central government data, 72,993 successful transplants took place from 2020 to 2024, but nearly 3,000 patients have lost their lives during the wait. Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have the highest number of patients. Women are ahead of men in organ donation, while the number of male patients is more in receiving organs.
Data of total patients and waiting list
There are currently more than 60,590 patients waiting for kidney transplant in India. Apart from this, 18,000 patients for liver transplant, 1,695 for heart transplant, 970 for lung transplant and 306 for pancreas transplant are included in the waiting list. Thus, a total of 82,285 patients are waiting for some organ transplant. The capital Delhi has the highest number of patients in the waiting list, especially in the case of kidney and liver transplant.
In the last five years (2020-2024), 72,993 organ transplants were successfully conducted in the country. Kidney transplant was the highest in this, 53,198 patients underwent successful operation. The highest number of kidney transplants (9,307) and liver transplants (6,368) were performed in Delhi. Tamil Nadu contributed the most in heart transplant.
Death in waiting list and lack of donor
According to government data, nearly 3,000 patients died while waiting for a transplant in the last five years. In Delhi, 1,425 patients died while on the waiting list. This is followed by Maharashtra (297) and Tamil Nadu (233). The number of organ donors is still very low. The total number of registered donors as of 2024 was 65,488, of which 4,071 have died and 61,417 are living.
Increasing contribution of women in organ donation
In India, women are ahead of men in terms of organ donation. According to the 2024 driving license data, willingness to donate organs among women ranged between 17% to 27%, while among men it ranged from 12% to 19%. However, among the patients receiving organs, the number of men is greater than that of women.
State wise figures and trends
Maharashtra has the highest number of patients for kidney transplant (13,045). This is followed by Gujarat (7,405), Chandigarh (6,681), Tamil Nadu (6,448) and Delhi (5,894). Maharashtra also has the highest number of patients undergoing liver transplant at 6,924. Tamil Nadu is the leader in heart and lung transplant.
