Oscars: As Laapataa Ladies misses out, Guneet Monga is keeping India’s hopes alive

New Delhi: All hopes are not lost for India at the Oscars 2025. While Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, failed to make it to the next round in the International Feature Film category, award-winning producer Guneet Monga is still in the race. How, you ask? Well, let us explain. You will be amazed to know that Anuja has been shortlisted in the Best Live-Action Short Film category.

It is to be noted that Guneet’s Anuja marks her third nomination at the Oscars. Her earlier projects – The Elephant Whisperers and Period: End of Sentence – brought glory to Indian cinema by winning the prestigious trophy at the celebrated event.

For the unversed, the storyline of Anuja revolves around the critical issue of child labour in the garment industry. It stars actor Nagesh Bhonsle in a pivotal role. Now, it would be really interesting to see if Anuja makes it to the upcoming nominations for the 97th Academy Awards.

How are nominations for the Academy Awards decided?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) recently narrowed down the names of the projects eligible for the Oscars 2025 race.
