Outrage after foreigner kicks pet dog at Da Nang spa, breaking three ribs
The shop’s surveillance footage shows the man suddenly kicking the dog before casually walking outside to stand by the roadside, while the man accompanying him, also a foreigner, remains seated, scrolling on a phone as if nothing had happened.
Speaking with Tien Phong newspaper, the owner of a spa on An Thuong 3 Street said he was still furious after the attack left his pet with three broken ribs.
He said that on the afternoon of March 7, two foreign men arrived at his spa. At the time, no staff were inside, so the pair sat down to wait. One of the men was sitting indoors scrolling on his phone before suddenly standing up, walking to the entrance and kicking the spa’s Pomeranian, which had been lying near the doorway.
The powerful kick sent the small dog crashing into the door before it fell back into the yard, yelping in pain.
The owner said no one had been in the shop at the time, as his wife had also stepped out. About 15 minutes later, she returned and found the dog crying in pain, and immediately took it to a veterinary clinic.
X-rays later showed the dog had three broken ribs.
“Because the dog is very small, the veterinarian said it could not be put in a cast and would have to heal naturally,” he added.
The owner said his family has raised the dog for many years and treats it like a close companion. Since the injury, the dog has struggled to move and appears frightened. The family has been giving it pain medication and taking extra care while it recovers.
After reviewing security footage and asking nearby residents, the family believes the two men were foreign tourists who spoke Chinese.
When they came to the spa they were even dragging suitcases with them, he said.
A video circulating online shows security camera footage from a spa in Da Nang, capturing a man kicking a dog on March 7, 2025.
The video has since been widely circulated online, drawing strong reactions from both Vietnamese users and foreigners living in the country. Many called for the man to be identified and punished, noting that pets are considered property under Vietnamese law and acts of cruelty toward animals can be subject to legal penalties.
An expatriate named Andrei Vialkov shared the video in a Facebook group for foreigners living in Da Nang, describing it as “a shocking case of animal cruelty.”
According to a decree on animal husbandry violations in Vietnam that took effect in 2021, beating and torturing certain animals could be punishable by fines of up to VND3 million ($114).
Specifically, beating or torturing domesticated animals, including four-legged mammals like dogs and cats and two-legged avian species like chickens and ducks, could result in fines between VND1 million and VND3 million, while abattoirs could be fined between VND3 million and VND5 million should they either beat animals prior to slaughtering them or not inducing unconsciousness prior to death.
