Over 3,700 vehicles challaned on first day of ‘No PUC, No Fuel’ campaign in Delhi

More than 3,700 vehicles were challaned on the very first day of the ‘No PUC, No Fuel’ campaign amid increasing air pollution and dense fog in the national capital Delhi. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that in the last 24 hours, about 570 vehicles violating the rules or being outside the destination were sent back from the Delhi border. During this period, more than 61,000 valid Pollution Control Certificates (PUCC) were also issued.

Nearly 5,000 vehicles checked at border posts

Officials said that on the first day of the operation, around 5,000 vehicles were checked at the border posts and 217 unwanted trucks were diverted towards the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways. Under dust and waste control, 2,300 kilometers of roads were cleaned with machines. Anti-pollution guns were used on 5,524 kilometers of roads and 132 illegal waste dumping sites were closed.

Sirsa said that during the intensive enforcement under the campaign, 568 non-compliant or non-specified vehicles were sent back. Additionally, 217 non-destinated trucks were diverted through the expressway to prevent unnecessary entry into the capital. He said these figures reflect both strict enforcement and public cooperation.

On Thursday, Sirsa conducted surprise inspections at several petrol pumps including the Delhi-Gurugram border and Janpath to ensure compliance with the ‘no PUC certificate, no fuel’ rule. He asked the pump employees to strictly enforce the rules and explain to the public that this is for their and their children’s health.

The Delhi government said the crackdown on vehicular pollution is part of its strategy to reduce emissions during severe air pollution events. Under this, attention is also being given to road dust, industrial pollution and waste management.

8.22 lakh challans so far in 2025

According to official data, more than 1.56 lakh challans have been issued for driving without PUC certificate in the last two months in Delhi. In the last three years, such challans have increased three times and till now in 2025 there have been 8.22 lakh challans.

Sirsa also warned that action will be taken against violators in private offices and construction works that do not follow the rules. During the GRAP period, 545 challans were issued on wrongful transportation of waste and commercial vehicles are being closely monitored.
