‘Have been living here for generations…’, threat of bulldozer action on more than 700 slums of Lutyens Delhi, increased concern among families
The threat of bulldozer action has now deepened on the slums of Jaipur Polo Ground and Bree Camp in the Race Course area located in the prestigious Lutyens Zone of the capital Delhi. The authorities have marked many houses and started the process of removing them. This step is being taken in compliance with the order of Delhi High Court, which has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among hundreds of families living in the area.
More than 700 families face homelessness crisis
More than 700 families have been living in Bree Camp for years. Most of these people earn their livelihood from domestic work, security, cleaning and other blue-collar jobs in the surrounding areas. The affected families have filed an appeal against the court order of May 11. They say that if they are rehabilitated in Savda Ghevra on the outskirts of Delhi, their means of employment will be badly affected.
Hope of saving the house and compulsion to pack things.
On Thursday, panic spread among the people after the activities of the officials increased in the area and preparations for demolition started. Many families have started removing doors, windows, tin sheets and other useful items from their homes to minimize their loss during a possible crackdown.
‘Have been living here for generations’ – Plight of local residents
Local resident Shan Khan says that his family and many other families have been living in this area for decades. According to him, many generations have grown up here and now people are in deep trouble after receiving eviction notices again. He said around 300 families have already been shifted to Savada Ghevra, while the remaining families are awaiting the outcome of the ongoing legal battle in the court.
Question of rehabilitation vs livelihood
The biggest issue in this dispute that has been going on since March is the balance between rehabilitation and employment. The affected families say that merely providing housing is not enough, but their livelihood and social structure should also be kept in mind. At present, all eyes are on the next decision of the court and the upcoming action of the administration.
