Paapa Essiedu Receives Death Threats After Being Cast as Snape in Harry Potter series

Especially Essiedu has revealed that he received death threats following his casting as Professor Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter serieshighlighting the darker side of online backlash in response to casting decisions.


In an interview with The Sunday TimesEssiedu shared that he encountered disturbing messages on social media, including threats to his life. He said that while he hopes such threats are not real, the emotional impact of such abuse is undeniable. The actor emphasized that no individual should face such hostility simply for taking on a professional role.

Essiedu, known for his performances in I May Destroy You and Black Mirroris stepping into the iconic role of Severus Snape, previously portrayed by Alan Rickman in the original film series. His casting sparked widespread debate among fans, with some questioning the reinterpretation of the beloved character.

Despite the backlash, Essiedu said the experience has strengthened his resolve to bring a fresh perspective to the role. He noted that representation in storytelling is important and expressed hope that a more diverse portrayal of characters could inspire a broader audience, particularly younger viewers who want to see themselves reflected on screen.

The actor also revealed that although he had not watched the original Harry Potter films, he grew up reading the books by J. K. Rowling and has a deep connection to the wizarding world. He described the opportunity as both a challenge and a responsibility.

The upcoming HBO series aims to be a faithful adaptation of the original book series, exploring the wizarding world in greater depth. Alongside Essiedu, the cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The series is expected to premiere on HBO Max in 2027 and is positioned as a major reboot of one of the most successful fantasy franchises globally.
