Shaheen Afridi Creates History: Shaheen Shah Afridi made his first innings against Bangladesh National Cricket Team starting on Friday 8th May at Shere Bangla National Stadium. On the first day of the match, Shaheen made a big record and became the first Pakistani bowler to take 100 wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC). Shaheen achieved this feat by dismissing Bangladesh opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy.
Joy was caught out by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan after scoring 8 runs in 19 balls. This wicket came on the first ball of the seventh over of the match. Before this Test, Shaheen had 99 wickets in his name in 47 innings of 28 WTC matches. He created history by touching the figure of 100 wickets in the opening session of the match itself. Spinner Noman Ali is at second place in the list of bowlers who have taken the most wickets for Pakistan in the WTC. Noman has taken 89 wickets in 20 WTC matches and was also Pakistan’s most successful bowler in the 2023-2025 WTC session.
Most wickets in the name of Nathan Lyon
Whereas spinner Sajid Khan is in third place with 63 wickets in 12 matches. The record for taking the most wickets in the World Test Championship history is in the name of Australia’s legendary off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who has taken 224 wickets in 55 matches. Australian captain Pat Cummins is at second place with 222 wickets in 54 matches, while left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc is at third place with 221 wickets in 52 matches.
Ashwin is the Asian taking the most wickets in WTC
Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is the highest wicket taker among Asian bowlers in WTC history. Ashwin, who retired from international cricket in December 2024, took 195 wickets in 41 matches. Whereas India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is second in the list of Asian bowlers and fifth overall with 185 wickets in 42 WTC matches.
