Lahore: A Pakistani court on Friday rejected a petition to rename Lahore's Shadman Chowk after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and install his statue. Lahore High Court Judge Shams Mahmood Mirza dismissed the petition filed by Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation Pakistan. In this petition, there was a demand to name Shadman Chowk after Bhagat Singh and install his statue at the place where he was hanged.

The Lahore High Court judge rejected the petition after hearing the arguments of the lawyers of Metropolitan Corporation Lahore and the Foundation. The foundation's chairman, advocate Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi, said he would challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.

Case of naming Shadman Chowk as Bhagat Singh

Earlier, the Lahore Municipal Corporation had told the High Court that it had canceled the plan to name Shadman Chowk after Bhagat Singh and install his statue there, where Bhagat Singh was hanged 94 years ago. At the same time, the Municipal Corporation said in the court, “The plan to name Shadman Chowk Lahore after Bhagat Singh and install his statue there has been canceled by the Lahore City District Government. “This decision has been taken due to a comment by Commodore (R) Tariq Majeed.”

High Court judge gave order

Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi had made the District Administration, Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, Chief Secretary of Punjab and Administrator of City District Administration as parties in the contempt petition of the court. The petition said that High Court Judge Shahid Jamil Khan had ordered on September 5, 2018 that Shadman Chowk be named after Bhagat Singh, but till now this order has not been implemented.

Let us tell you that Lahore High Court Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza had postponed the hearing of the contempt petition till January 17 due to the absence of the petitioner's lawyer.

Let us tell you that Bhagat Singh (23) was hanged in Lahore on 23 March 1931 after being tried on charges of conspiring against the British government. He and his associates Sukhdev and Rajguru were convicted in the murder of British police officer John P Saunders. After being found guilty, all three were given death sentence.
