Delhi. India is the sixth most polluted country in the world in terms of levels of fine particulate matter (PM), a major factor in air pollution, while Loni in Uttar Pradesh is the most polluted city globally. This information is given in the World Air Quality Report, 2025. The eighth edition of the report, published by Swiss air quality technology company IQAir, analyzed data from monitoring stations located in 9,446 cities across 143 countries and territories. “Only 14 percent of global cities met the World Health Organization’s annual PM2.5 guideline of five micrograms per cubic meter of airspace, down from 17 percent last year,” the report said. “Only thirteen countries/territories have met WHO’s annual average PM2.5 guidelines. They are French Polynesia, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Barbados, New Caledonia, Iceland, Bermuda, Reunion, Andorra, Australia, Grenada, Panama and Estonia.”

The report also said that forest fires intensified due to climate change played a major role in the deterioration of global air quality by 2025. Record biomass emissions from Europe and Canada contributed about 1,380 megatons of carbon.

Canada was the most polluted country in North America for the second time in the report’s eight-year history as its second-worst wildfires hit air quality across Canada, the US and parts of Europe. In Europe, 23 countries recorded increases in annual average PM2.5 concentrations, 18 countries recorded declines, and one country was newly added.
