Pakistan shocked by Baloch attack, Shahbaz government will form special force to save China’s dam project

New Delhi: Pakistan’s Shahbaz Sharif government seems to be under pressure after the major terrorist attack in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan. Let us tell you, after this attack, the government has expedited the decision to create a new special force for the security of important projects related to the water and power sector of the country. This force has been named Wapda Security Force, which will be formed under the Wapda Security Force Act 2026.

According to the information, the government says that its objective is to ensure the safety of the important infrastructure under the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) and the employees working there, especially the employees associated with China.

Why did you take this decision?

According to the report of Pakistani newspaper Dawn, the decision to create a separate security force has been taken after the terrorist attacks on Dasu Hydropower Project. Let us tell you, many Chinese and Pakistani engineers were killed in these attacks in November 2021 and March 2024, after which the decision was taken to build Dasu Hydropower, which is costing about 6 billion dollars to build. After these incidents, China had expressed serious concern about the security of Pakistan and warned that if Chinese citizens are not safe then economic cooperation and funding may be affected.

Why did the work stop for a year?

It has been reported in the report that earlier the special security divisions of Pakistan Army were given security only for CPEC projects, whereas many projects of Wapda did not come under this purview. After the attack on the Dasu project, China had stopped work for more than a year. Although later the construction work was resumed after the intervention and compensation of the Government of Pakistan, this increased the cost of the project significantly.

Who will get security arrangements?

Now the Pakistan government has decided that security arrangements like CPEC will be given to all those projects where Chinese citizens are working. Under this, Army, local police, Rangers and Frontier Constabulary will also be included in the security arrangements. In fact, recently the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) had attacked a train carrying soldiers in Quetta. During this incident, the organization collided a car filled with explosives with a train, in which many soldiers and their families died. This attack has raised serious questions on the security system in Pakistan.
