Pakistan’s preparations were halted, America and Iran gave a big blow; PM Shahbaz Sharif’s Switzerland tour suddenly canceled
After the historic peace deal between America and Iran, neighboring country Pakistan has suffered a major diplomatic setback. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has suddenly postponed his planned visit to Switzerland to attend the formal signing ceremony between the US and Iran. The main reason for the cancellation of this tour is that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two superpowers has already been signed through digital medium and this megadeal has also been implemented on the ground with immediate effect. Pakistan was playing the role of mediator along with Qatar in this entire matter and was busy preparing for celebrations on a large scale. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Special Spokesperson Mosharraf Zaidi officially confirmed the diplomatic change, saying the grand signing ceremony to be held on Friday at Switzerland’s luxurious Bergenstock resort has now become irrelevant as both the countries have finalized the documents electronically. Mahadeal came into force with immediate effect with digital signature, Shahbaz Sharif removed his social media post. A few hours before this diplomatic stir, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif himself had informed the whole world about the implementation of this agreement through a post on the social media platform X. He had said that under the first phase of this historic agreement, Iran will immediately reopen the ‘Strait of Hormuz’ for international trade without any delay, while in return the US will lift its strict naval blockade against Iran with immediate effect. However, the suspense in this entire incident deepened when Shehbaz Sharif amended his official Soon after, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, while talking to BBC Urdu, clarified that now the physical ceremony in Switzerland has been completely canceled due to the signing being done through remote media (digital medium). Why is the opening of the Strait of Hormuz a lifeline for the global economy? On the strategic and economic front, the Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important and sensitive maritime trade routes in the world. About 20 percent of the total supply of crude oil in the global market passes through this narrow waterway alone. After the US-Israeli attacks in late February this year, clouds of war started looming in the Middle East, in response to which Iran blocked the entire waterway in early March, bringing global oil trade to a halt. In retaliation, the US imposed an all-out naval blockade against Iran in April, causing global fuel prices to skyrocket. Pakistan and Qatar played a big role behind the scenes, the global energy market will get relief. Even though the grand ceremony to be held in Switzerland has been cancelled, Pakistan and Qatar have played a very important role as mediators behind the scenes in implementing this entire agreement. Due to the continuous efforts of these two countries, the tough stance of America and Iran eased and both the countries finally came to the table and agreed to reduce tensions and normalize maritime trade. International diplomatic experts believe that after the official implementation of this deal, there will be stability in the global energy market and a huge fall in the prices of crude oil may be seen, which will provide great relief to all the developing countries of the world including India.
