PAN Card Status: Find out in minutes whether your PAN card is active or closed, this is the direct link

First of all, know that no official announcement has been made yet by the government or the Income Tax Department regarding extension of the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking. This clearly means that if you have not linked these two important documents by the stipulated time, then from January 1, 2026, your PAN card may become like a useless piece of plastic. The department declares such PAN cards as ‘inoperative’ i.e. inactive.

What will stop when PAN card is closed?

If your PAN card has become inoperative, your problems may increase significantly. You will neither be able to file your Income Tax Return (ITR) nor do major bank related transactions. Not only this, you may also face huge difficulties in investing in the stock market, mutual funds and availing many government facilities. Wherever PAN is mandatory, your work may get stuck midway.

How to check your PAN status sitting at home

If you do not remember whether you linked Aadhaar-PAN or not, instead of panic, check the status immediately. This work can be done in minutes by visiting the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department. You just need to enter your PAN number, date of birth and mobile number. After this, an OTP will come on your phone, as soon as it is filled, it will be visible on the screen whether your PAN is active or not.

If the PAN has been switched off then what is the way to restart it?

People whose PAN card has been deactivated do not need to worry, because it can be reactivated. For this you will have to pay the prescribed late fee i.e. fine. After paying the fine you can complete the linking process. However, keep in mind that PAN is not activated immediately after paying the fees, it takes some time.

In how many days will your PAN start working again?

Once you have paid the fine and submitted a request to link PAN and Aadhaar, it may take a few days to a few weeks for it to be reactivated. Until your PAN is reactivated, rules like Excess Tax Deduction (TDS) may continue to be applicable to you. Therefore, it is wise not to postpone this work till tomorrow.
