lost vote of confidence

Let us tell you that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday had ordered the dissolution of Parliament and holding of elections on February 23 in view of the defeat of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government in the trust vote. Scholz lost a confidence vote on December 16 and now leads a minority government. Scholz's three-party coalition government was thrown into crisis on November 6 when he fired his finance minister amid a dispute over how to revive Germany's stagnant economy.

Elections will be held within 60 days

Leaders of several major parties then agreed that parliamentary elections should be held on 23 February, seven months earlier than originally scheduled. Since the post-World War II constitution does not allow the Bundestag (Parliament) to dissolve itself, it was up to Steinmeier to decide whether to dissolve Parliament and call elections. He had 21 days to decide. After the dissolution of Parliament, elections must be held in the country within 60 days.
