Parthiv Patel raises fielding concerns ahead of T20 WC semi-finals
India has been one of the worst catching teams in the current tournament. Suryakumar Yadav’s team has dropped 13 catches in the entire tournament. India’s catching efficiency has dropped to the lowest in the tournament at 72.7%. Surprisingly, Pakistan, often criticized for their fielding, are comfortably above that with an 83.3% success rate.
“One concern I have is the fielding, and not just the way India fielded in the match at Eden Gardens. This has been happening for about a year and a half now. We are dropping a lot of catches. It is something that India would definitely like to work on,” Patel told Jio Hotstar.
India reached the semi-finals with a hard-fought win over West Indies at the Eden Gardens, successfully chasing a target of over 190. Patel called it a big result for the team.
Parthiv said, “It was a great win. It will be a big confidence booster for India going forward. India won the toss and decided to bowl first, thinking there would be a lot of dew. When the match ended, there was no dew at all, but the conditions had got a little better. In a knockout game, chasing a target of 190-plus, someone needed to play a brilliant innings, and Sanju Samson did that. Did.” He further said, “The Captain praised himself.
He has scored a lot of centuries in international cricket, but for me, this innings was at the top. Skill wise, we all know Sanju Samson is a very talented batsman, but it is very difficult to fight those mental battles. I thought Sanju Samson did this very well. He also told how his experience came in handy. I thought it was a very mature innings. He always seemed in control. He did not try to hit the ball hard. He will remember this innings for a long time.”
Patel also gave special praise to pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who is sometimes taking vital wickets and putting pressure on the opposition team.
“Bumrah is not a banker. He is the bank himself. The way he bowls, when you want to take wickets against the in-form Hetmyer, he comes and takes his wicket, then sets up Roston Chase. Obviously, India have looked at Jasprit Bumrah most of the time, and he has never disappointed. He does that very often. You are playing in a format now, in this era, where you are trying to stop a batsman. The only way is to get him out, and Jasprit Bumrah does that.”
Parthiv also talked about the challenge he faced from the England team. He advised India to perform its best.
He said, “India obviously need to get England’s dangerous batsmen out as quickly as possible. You have Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, who are run-scorers and they love the Wankhede Stadium. Then you have Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Jacob Bethel and Harry Brook. So, they have a good, solid line-up. It is a good all-round team. Obviously, against England, India will have to be at their best. Have to be on top of the game.”
