A blazing star lost in darkness
Parveen Babi was once counted among the brightest celebrities of Bollywood. She was the first Indian actress to get a place on the cover of Time Magazine. But there came a turn in her life which pushed her into the dark depths of loneliness and mental illness.
Mahesh Bhatt said, "Life hurts you, and that was Parveen's fate. She was a blazing flame, but mental illness swallowed her. His story was like a nursery rhyme that turned into a tragedy."
Parveen's death and Mahesh Bhatt's reaction
Mahesh Bhatt told that when he heard the news of Parveen Babi's death, he was in Hyderabad. Tanuja Chandra's message had come to give him this sad news. He said, "I got a message from Tanuja: 'Parveen Bobby is dead.' Hearing this it was as if time stopped." Parveen's body was lying unclaimed in Cooper Hospital. The actress, who was once considered a symbol of glamour, was completely alone after her death.
"I said, I'll bury them"
Mahesh Bhatt further said, "When I heard that his body was unclaimed, I came forward and said that I would bury him. But as soon as this news came out, his long missing relatives came forward. I stepped back and let him move forward."
Parveen Babi: Flying on wings of wax
Mahesh Bhatt compared Parveen Babi's life to the Greek story of Icarus. He said, "Parveen's story is like Icarus. She tried to fly too close to the sun, but ended up falling into the abyss. Their destruction was my resurrection."
"I wouldn't be without them"
Mahesh Bhatt also said that Parveen Babi gave an autobiographical vision to his cinema. He said emotionally, "Without Parveen, I would never have emerged as a filmmaker. Today on his death anniversary, I thank him. She gave a direction to my life that only she could give."
